Vegan activist Earthling Ed has announced he is opening a sanctuary to protect unwanted animals.

Vegan activist and educator Earthling Ed (Ed Winters) is opening an animal sanctuary in the Midlands to offer a ‘forever home to abused and unwanted animals’.
The sanctuary has been made possible by profits from Surge charity’s East-London restaurant Unity Diner, as well as donations and other fundraisers.
According to Ed, the Surge Sanctuary is the ‘realisation of a two-year dream since the opening of Unity Diner in 2018’. The aim of the successful restaurant was to showcase delicious vegan food while also raising money to open an animal sanctuary.
Surge says its mission is to ‘offer a lifelong, no-kill, safe haven and forever home to abused and unwanted animals’. In addition to saving animals, the charity also intends to grow vegan produce, rewild, and ‘provide natural habitats for pollinators and other wildlife’ on the 18-acre site.

The residents
Surge Sanctuary is already home to a few animals, all rescued from the animal agriculture industry. Featured on the sanctuary’s Instagram page, the first residents include Eric the sheep, Harold and Fred the turkeys, Camila and Chloe the ex-battery hens, and Gus and Pete the pigs.
Speaking to Plant Based News, Ed said: “We already have a group of residents who have settled in and are getting used to lounging around, eating lots of delicious food and most importantly, living their lives without being harmed or exploited.
“And we can’t wait to keep growing the sanctuary and welcoming more and more animals so that they too can live the life that they deserve to live.”

Ed added: “But we couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone who has worked at Unity Diner, eaten at Unity Diner and supported the work that myself and the Surge team do.
