Actress and screenwriter Maggie Baird has won an award from a prominent animal-rights group for her vegan-inspired nonprofit, The Post has learned.
The mother of Grammy Award-winning songstress Billie Eilish launched Support + Feed during the pandemic, which provides a platform for people to buy gift cards from plant-based restaurants and directs the meals to organizations that feed people in need as well as first responders.
In response, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals on Wednesday handed Baird the group’s 2020 Company of the Year award.
“PETA is recognizing this small but mighty operation for fueling restaurants and vulnerable individuals while showing that the future of food is vegan,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement.
Support + Feed has facilitated nearly 50,000 free meals in New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC to women’s shelters, food banks and other groups.
PETA’s Company of the Year award has previously has gone to puffer jacket company Save the Ducks, which eschews duck feathers; WeWork, for banning meat at company events and disallowing employees to expense any meals containing meat; and Netflix for promoting films that encourage viewers to empathize with animals.
PETA also recently honored the 17-year-old Eilish with its Best Voice for Animals Award for taking a stand against using animals in fashion.
PETA’s network of 6.5 million members and supporters around the world has been an effective cudgel in the fashion industry, in particular, by exposing brands to boycotts and negative publicity — including campaigns against Canada Goose, Michael Kors and Louis Vuitton — for using fur and skin in their merchandise.
